I figure the only way to know's going to be to play it. Trying to front like they're a preferable alternative to GTA4 is not a great idea.
Right now I feel like the devil is in the details...the details of multiplayer. If that's good then the rest of the game could be a turd in an earthenware pot for all I care.

NOW THAT I HAVE WATCHED THE PREVIEW:
It's a crap shoot. All the stuff they're showing, it looks fun for sure, but what they're missing about gta4 is that what I have the most fun with is not going to the cabaret, or the rote repetition of the thousand things I've done before in GTA games, but the way the new engine opens up the door for a slathering festivity of hot, viscous emergent gameplay. GTA4 enthralls me so much because of all the tiny touches which make the world of it real, or at least stunningly different from anything I've seen before - the way I can grip on to the back of truck and hang on for dear life, things like that. If Saints Row 2 can offer something like that, I'd be all for it. As is, it looks kind of like a beefed-up San Andreas with multiplayer, which I certainly wouldn't turn down.
And the sewage thing - okay, yes, I want to do that.
A videogames aside: Hey did you know someone hacked the pc .exe for Phantasy SO and it's basically free and extremely expanded now? A forum I'm on is getting in on the action and it's nostalgically satisfying. Ah, 2002.
